The Challenge
As students increasingly engage in group discussions and collaborative learning outside the classroom, the need for accessible, outdoor power solutions has become urgent - particularly during South Africa's frequent loadshedding periods. Traditional campus furniture lacked the functionality to support this shift in learning habits. Students required spaces that were not only comfortable and accessible but also equipped to support their digital devices. At the same time, the University was seeking ways to reduce its carbon footprint and invest in sustainable infrastructure that aligns with global development goals.
SunArc's Solution
To meet both the practical and environmental needs of the University, SunArc implemented solar-powered benches at the Braamfontein East and West campuses. These benches are fitted with high-capacity solar panels and 4800Wh battery storage, capable of powering a standard 65W laptop for up to nine days on a single charge.
The benches are more than just charging stations - they are smart outdoor workspaces that offer lighting at night and contribute to campus wellness by encouraging outdoor engagement. As a pilot initiative launched in 2023, the project showcases how smart design and sustainable technology can be integrated into everyday campus life.
Outcomes
- Reliable Power Access: Students now have uninterrupted access to power for their devices, even during loadshedding or overcast days.
Promotes Sustainability: The initiative supports the University's 2023 Sustainability Strategy and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Enhances Student Wellness: By encouraging outdoor study, the benches help promote mental health and create vibrant, green communal spaces.
Night-Time Accessibility: Integrated lighting ensures the benches are usable and easy to find after dark.
Scalable Success: Following the success at Braamfontein, the University plans to expand the initiative to its Parktown campuses.
Through this partnership, SunArc is playing a key role in helping institutions transition toward greener, smarter, and more student-friendly environments
Client Feedback
"Aside from it's utility function, the less obvious benefit is linked to student wellness. Being outdoors promotes mental health and by providing more outdoor learning facilities we are ensuring that students enjoy the sun, blue skies and the beautiful well-maintained environment around us"
